Evaluation Question 1

eval q 1

Evaluation Question 7 - emily

After looking and analysing our preliminary exercise and our final film product we saw cirtain similaritys and differences. We can see a huge improvement between our first ecercise and our final film, in areas such as editing, stillness in the camera movement, placement, continuity and planning.

Camera angles- We used a low angle close up of jacks feet in our prelim, we like this shot and thaught it was effective and builds tension and suspence so we decided to use this in our film opening to create the same feeling of suspece and tension.

Editing- In our prelim we found that our editing as a whole was bad at all so for our film we just improved on our skills to make it look even better with smotther transitions from shot to shot. we also decided to use differnt transitions such as fade in ourt film to create a more realistic look.

Planning- in our prelim we founf that our planning wasnt great and was shown throuoght the film such as in shot (0.05-0.07) you can see someone in the right hand corner that wasnt ment to be there. Continuity this time was better and more effective and we hope that this is shown.

Throughought doing this we have found that all of us have our strenghts and weeknesses and as working in a group both times we played on these strenghts and brought people up to do their best in their weeknesses to hopfully make a very sucsessful film opening.

Evaluation Question 6. Emily

This flow chart that we have created, shows the order in which we used technology to plan, create and evaluate our film. as you can see we have a variaty of technology varing from websights to video cameras.

alswell as the things we have noted on this photoshop photo, we have also used:

Camera- to take pictures for our storyboard/ananmatic. (ALL)

mobiles- to communicate with eachother.(ALL)

social networking site- to communicate with eachother.(ALL)

Video recorder- to film the shots (HANNAH)

Music making appliences- to create our own music. (EMILY)

Editing of shots- to make our film look creative. (JACK)

Evaluation Question 2- Jack

-Vest

-Jeans

-Urban dance movements

-Shaved Head

-Muscle

-Baggy clothing

-Not very stylish - cannotes to maybe being wealthy

-Adidas/ nike trainers, that look old and worn.

-Dark wash denim.

-Tracksuit Bottoms

-Hood up, youth stereotype

- Hoodie

-Ear phones- shows passion for music

- Dark colours- may reflkect his mood.

-Old clothes cannoting to not having much money.

Here we have two screen shots, one taken from My groups film opening 'Parralell Lives' and the other from 'Step Up' a dance production film by Anne Fletcher brought to our screens in 2006. I have chosen Channing's role to compare with my own because I think there are different similarities and differences between the two characters. Both have fictionally been brought up in the rough areas of where they live and both have an avid interest in street/urban dance. The difference between the characters is that channing in 'Step Up' is respected for his dancing whereas I get beaten up for dancing. We chose to do this in our opening because we thought that it refelcted well on todays youth society and how it seems almost unacceptable for a males to dancers.

Evaluation Question 4. Hannah

We have appealed to our audience taste in music film and t.v by includeding many of the conventions that apply to these. The music we created had the feeling of the music styles that our audience listens to.

AS Evaluation Questions and Activities
For the final 20 marks of the project, you must complete seven tasks on your blog, posting them in this order, with the question heading at the top of each task. You may do them as a pair/group, but must post individual copies on each blog. Make sure you answer each question as well as producing the visual elements.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of film openings)

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups ?

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

7. Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 1
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of film openings)

Remember when we looked at 9 frames from Art of the title sequence? Well now it's your turn to do the same with nine of your frames.

You should go through the final version of the project and select nine distinct frames which you screengrab and drop into a photoshop in the same style as the website. You will be using these to write about how typical or not of opening sequences your particular design is, so choose them carefully.

Once you have the nine frames neatly in Photoshop, screengrab the whole thing and post to your blog, then write an analysis of how you have used such conventions.

The aspects we would like you to consider across your nine frames are:

The title of the film
Setting/location
Costumes and props
Camerawork and editing
Title font and style
Story and how the opening sets it up
Genre and how the opening suggests it
How characters are introduced
Special effects

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 2
How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Pick a key character from your opening. Take a screengrab of a reasonable sized image of them. Think of one or more characters from other films with some similarity to them (but maybe some differences too!), find an image on the web of that/those characters and grab it as well. Drop the two into photoshop, as a split screen. Export this splitscreen image as a jpeg then drop onto your blog and write about the similarities and differences in terms of appearance, costume, role in film etc.

So for example if you have a lone cop type character, look for other lone cops to compare him with...

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

For this question, you are going to do a 'director's commentary' style voiceover explaining some of the key features of your opening

You will need to script the voiceover which deals with institutional issues to include:

discussion of your production company name and logo and the role of such companies

What does a production company do? start here
the idea of a distributor and who that might be and why. start here
where the money might have come from for a film such as yours herewhy the various people are named in the titles- which jobs appear in titles and in what order and how have you reflected this?
what your film is similar to 'institutionally' (name some films which would be released in a similar way)
You need to refer to actual company names and processes so you will need to go back to the early posts on film companies and maybe do a bit more research

When you have scripted, record the voiceover using Final Cut on a new audio timeline, then export to quicktime and embed on blog.

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 4
Who would be the audience for your media product?

You should have a drawing of your target audience member and an explanation of what kinds of taste they might have- where they would shop, what music they would listen to, what their favourite Tv programme would be, etc.

make sure you have taken a phot of it, post it on the blog and write a few notes on why they would watch your film.

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 5
How did you attract/address your audience?
You will use YOUTUBE's annotation tools to add NOTES, SPEECHBUBBLES, and LINKS to your video
These annotations will highlight the ways in which your Film Opening links to other similiar films in order to attract the particular Audience you have previously identified.

Your annotations will refer to genre conventions, use of music, similiarities with other movies and what you have identified as the Unique Selling Point of your imaginary film.

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 6
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

In pairs, take a picture of each other holding the kit you have used. This might just be the camera and tripod, and your Macbook but there may be other things you want in the shot.

Drop the image onto your blog and annotate it, adding all the programs and other technology you have used as screengrabs and what you learnt about it/from using it. Your written text need only be minimal. You could include reference to all the online and computer programs you have
used such as youtube, flickr, blogger, final cut, photoshop, vimeo garageband, etc.

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 7
Looking back at your preliminary task (the continuity editing task), what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Concentrate on editing and camerawork.

Grab some frames from both tasks and put them on the blog and show what you know about shot types, edit terms and techniques.

Make sure you mention the 180 degree rule, match on action and shot/reverse shot

Anamatic/StoryBoard

Here we have our slideshow of the groups Anamatic/story board.

We have created this by taking photos alongside filming, we managed to get similar shots that we took as we thought that due to its being an opening including dance that it would be much easier to understand with there being photographs rather than stick drawings.

At the time this was a lot of work but we think it has paid off and looks clear and easy to understand and gives the viewer a short insight into our vision of the film opening.

The music.

As a group we have started to make our music. We are finding this the hardest bit of our entire film, this is because we have an idea of what we want but we just carnt make it. So after re-thinking what we want, we are re-making the music to fit our theme still, but not with our original ideas.

The Effects Of Dancing In Footage.

Here is a loongshot of the 3 dancers, this shot shows the viewer a clear position that the dancers are in. This is most effective in projects such as music videos because they are only short snippets of dancing rather than an elongated dance. The video 'Single Ladies' by Beyonce, has recently been nominated the most iconic music video on the 2000's due to its simplicity and clarity.

The Plan,.

After recieving the feedback from the teachers about our film opening we have sat down as a group and decided what we think we need to complete/change/ completely redo.

We have decided after recieving teacher guidance that we can take footage out of the fillm so it makes it feel more of an opeining without giving to much away.

We will be re shooting at Future Faces with Sam Chandler, The Female lead so we can take more shots of her dancing, this will then be 'parallel' to Jacks scene that was much appreciated by the Teacher.

Monday 8 March 2010

Logo :)

Here are the logos we are going to choose out of, we have decided on these logos as they are simple and portrays the urban feel that we where going for, Both have the record disc we hope to give the effect that most of our films are music oriented. Along with the recond, the buildings illistrate and urban or city environment that matches the vibe for our opening scene. The one that we will be using is the first one due to the bold initials of the companies name, therefore making the company stand out as well as the film.

Thursday 4 March 2010

Title of film.

We have decided as a group to call our film parallel lives. We thaught this would be a good name for our film because i really gives the audience a insight into what our film is about. The meaning of the name is that two lives are going on, parallel to eachother and they never meet but in our film they do. We wanted to explore how contast could show this in many different ways. Such as, wealth, gender and style of dance. Things about them are different. They come from a different backgound and different styles, but its their love for dance which brings their parallel lives together.

Targets & Feedback- 03-03-10

After receiving 'constructive' critism from our teachers, Mr Ford and Mr Smith, it is evident to us the things they beleive look good and what they think doesnt.
They have advised us to shorten the story as they think it is too long and tells a whole story rather than the opening sequene. They beleive that by adding cross cutting and parrallel editing will make the opening sequence more visually pleasing.
They think, taking into consideration the story and our oringinal idea that the idea of him being beaten up is a bad idea, they thihnk to not include this will make the sequence feel more like the opening of a film.
They have also said to us that the credits need to run throughout the opening which will then again make it seem more realistic.
Other things we need to complete are;
Mood Boards- a collection of images which give an insight into the drama of our film.
25 word pitch Feedback- Feedback given from the rest for the group after our simple presentation of what our film/ opening sequence is going to be about.
Storyboards and anamatics- these need to be uploaded. we have these but need to be put onto blog.
Rough cut of film- Needs to be uploaded onto the blog to show our progress. We have tried to do this but as we have it saved in a Macintosh format it has proved difficult to upload onto a windows computer which does not support the correct programme.

Not all of the feedback was constructively negative, the teachers told us that the boys scene was well executed with good mise en scene, a great dance sequence and good use of close up shots.

Our Target Audience

Setting part 2.

As part of our film we have decided to use the underneath of a bridge in whetstone. We have used this place because we thought that it could be anywhere i.e. London, Birmingham/Lutterworth.

The urban looking bridge gives the audience an insight into the life that the charcaters may be leading. Unfortunately for us, previous to the day of filmjing there was graffiti all over the wall, This was not a major problem because the wall looked slightly ruined and tatt anyway.

We seemed to be extremely lucky on the day due to the light, we had a birght sunny day so it was comfortable for us to get all of our shots.

Lets hope when we revisit the location that the weatrher and light are of a similar standard.
:)

Slideshow 24/01/2010 Filming Day 1

This is a slideshow full of snap shots of the first day of shooting, on this day we shot some of jacks dancing scenes; we did come across some prolems whilst shooting in this location. As you can see it is a public bypass and therefore there was significant amount of people passing through e.g the man and his dog, this made it very difficult as we had to kep stoping and starting.

Costume - Hannah.

In our short opening sequence we have to make sure our actors our dressed in the style of the character. With the actors we our using they both do not portray the kind of character we want them to play therefore will will have to dress them appropriately to make sure that our plan is met. For instance jack will be playing a underpriveledged youth that is involved with the local gang. So we have to change

jack. stylish. long hair. blazer. scarves. lucky. well lived. glasses. middle class.
into
hoddie. tracksuit bottoms. maybe jeans. jacket. nike. addidas. skinhead. grubby. no lurxuries. working class.

The person we would like Jack to play is not so underpriveledged that he can't afford major brands like nike or addidas but where does he get the money from ? he doesne have the money to afford brands like allsaints or zara, these brands wud not mix well with the story we are going to tell. We wanted something with more of a street vibe that brings across his life. In his life he may get some things that are nice but only at the price of violence.

For the upper body we have decided to use a hooded jacket to represent the age and the social class of the character, underneth we have used a plain top to not distract and draw attention from the surrounding.

For the same reason as above we used tracksuit bottoms this gives the audience an insight into the boys social networking group. They also show that his hobbie of dance shines through his day to day clothing.

The plain white pums where used to stand out from the trousers to show clear and precise movements.

The denim bag was used because we as a group thought it looked aged and may give the audience the idea that it has been passed down to the boy. This further cannotes to the boy not being financially stable.

Headphones were used to show the boys dedication to dance. As a group we understand that a boy in his position may not be able to afford this luxury, but we thought it was necessary to portray the boys full character.

This is evidence of our planning and what each part of the costume showed.

Hannah- Characters.

After looking and analysing our pitch, we have realised the skill in the characters we are going to use is crutial. We therefore need somebody that is able to dance and act at the same time. We have rounded it down to Olivia Kimberley, a drama and dance student which is perfect for our genre. We have struggled to find a male dancer that is capable of both, as a group we have decided to use Jack, a member of the group. Of course we are going to have to discuss filming issues, becuase he will need to be part of the filimg to gain the grade. Hopefully it will all work out.
:)

Emily Jack Hannah- Music Choice

We have thaught about our music choice alot really and have searched about for UNcopyrighted music. At the moment we havent found a piece to fit our film perfectly so are still in the process of finding one that we all like. We have used websights such as Sound cloud but are still unsucsessful.

The only other idea that we had was to make our own music on our friends mac and asking one of our other good friends to mix it for us. We believe this then will give us the music for our film which we desire, and would fit best with the genre of the peice. as you can tell with our idea classical or jazz wouldnt work but something more hip-hop rap would work better. Somthing with heavy beats for jack being on screen and softer beats for when olivia is showing CONTRAST.

Jack-Flash Dance - The last scene.

As we were concidering doign an audition process style section in our film opening, i have decided to watch and analyse one of the most famous auditions in film history. The fact that it isnt the actual actress dancing is beside the point.
The fact that she isnt accepted in the scene, you can tell this by lookign at the judges faces whilst 'she' is dancing. This is something that us as a group is interested in, we think that by bringing in that element may add a different dimension to the opening. We think that it will also fit with the Kidulthood aspect because opur dancer may not fit in with the 'urban' society that they have been brought up in. There is not much complex editinig in this piece but it is pulled of due to the space it has been shot in. We unfortunatley dont have this kind of space to film the opening so we have therfore decided to take more of a complicated route. For instance we are going to add in some more close up complicated shots, this will be difficult as on average we will shoot 5 or 6 shots for just one dance move but I think this will be payed of when we see the finished product. ..... Eventually.

:)

Jack- Kidulthood.

I have seen a bundle to Brit flicks that show a hyped by stylish glamorised side of London . Should be Lock Stock , or Snatch , or maybe even Notting Hill these movies have always shown the romantic side of London . However that is only the sugar coated topping , there is another world underneath that what is known to most who grew up on the streets of London as the real world . The director of Kidulthood does a masterful job giving a strong one sided vision of the urban London life. The social issues that are highlighted in this film are spot on , whether it be the drug abuse , teenage pregnancies or the ever looming threat of the gang culture with the idiotic craze which is known as Happy slapping .Kidulthood presents to the viewer a true , grim , depiction of a life a 15 year old black teenager Trife and his life growing up in the tough neighbourhood and school where words come cheap .We are taken into his world for just 1 day and meet a whole host of characters who fit into the doomed path of life probably just like Trife . The director chose's location's that were truly urban nitty and gritty to the point that you don't need to marvel at the breath taking scenery. . In general Kidulthood is a deep , dark , depressing look on the darker side of London's youth and by looking at it one will walk away probably wanting to take a look back at his life and see where is his or her future heading for .

After watching the film I felt shocked at how literal the actual fim is. The film really does show the urban side of what normally is seen as such a romantic funny place.... London.
I think kidulthood is one of the best influences for our video as we were looking for an uneasy urban atmosphere.

Jack Emily Hannah- Film Pitch

The Determination to follow your DREAM.

:)

Jack- Planning.

After looking over our group blog with the group and the teacher we have come to the conclusion that by writing horror on our planning sheets we are giving out the wrong message. When we said it I dont think the group were really thinking about the reprocutions. We have now come to the conclusion that if we want to create an urban atmosphere and effect we are going to have to mix the dance element with something along the lines of that theme. So therfor after deliberation with the teacher, we have decided to mix it with the theme of Adulthood.

:)

Emily- Our film, out look

We cannot emphasise enough that our opening isnt going to be a musical. It will be set in the UK so it relates back to it audience. We didnt want any cheesey rags to riches typical dance film and we didnt want it to be a really bad atempt of a rubbish horror film. So we have taken the element of murder and death from horror and incerted it into the genre of dance to make a neat and different twist. The dance element will not be like westside story/hairspray where the people join in but be part of the script like flashdance/ step up ect. Therfore it is a film about dance not a film with dance, which makes a significant diference to the audience and how are film will be percieved. The horror section is linked with the dance section; the person is being murded the person dancing's choreography is baced on the murded happening. The dance will play a juxtaposition to the murder happening. Quite difficult to explain but we believe it will look very effective. The music to the film can be created.

Emily- Setting & Location

we think for part of our film we would like an ally setting with graffiti to show how rough the area is. this is going to be used for the scene where jack gets beeten up but also maybe used for jacks home as we wanted to give the feel that he doesnt really have any money so lives on the street. At first we wanted to ally scene to be at night but it doesnt corispond with our idea very well so it will have to be in a dark allyway but in the day. we have thaught of a location we can uses to film this scene in whetstone. It is an underground bypass in which is very rarley used which is good for filming. This would be a great place to film the beating up scene in our film, as it shows the kidulthood idea of our film. we thaught about how the lack of light would affect us but i went to check it out and the light in the day time seems adiquate.

We are also going to use the school as part of our location as this is a great place to hold auditions and is easily acsessable for all three of us, and people we are using in the film. We are going to use the main hall to hold the auditions and the dance room as the waiting room. the lighting in both places are great for filming so there is no problem there. The only problem with using these two rooms is the lack of time being able to get hold of them on our own to film as they are used quite abit for afterschool activitys.

Hannahs bedroom is also going to be used for the waking up scene, in which olivias character is going to wake up grab her stuff and then go off to the auditions. lighting will be no problem as the windows let in alot of natual light and also the location is very acessable. This will be her home which is a big contrast to jacks home, which is outside.

Future Faces is also going to be used for a short while in order for olivia to walm up in our film, this will show the social class between the two characters (Olivia and Jack) she will have a proper space to walm up and practice in which jack doesnt.

All in all we believe that the location/settings we have decided to use will be suitable and work very well with our choice of film. the locations show the different social class between the characters. They show contrast which is a major part of what our film is about. We have gone through the pro's and con's of using each setting and we believed that the pro's outweighed the con's.

Jack- Initial Ideas

As a group we have decided that it would be a good idea to create a film opening which incorporates dance. We all share an interest in the subject and have all worked closely together in that area before.
We also thought that it could be quite individual and creative and hopefully we could end up with good end project.
We have spoken as a group and thought about what inspires us to do something along the lines of a dance film.

Step up- We have all spoken about this film and the ways in which it includes 2 different styles of
dance. This is something that we may be interested in doing with our own piece.

Fame 2009 the remake. We went to see this film together and all thought that the dancing and
level of talent was incredible.
